How to Move Forward After a Layoff, Part 2

How to Move Forward After a Layoff, Part 2How to Move Forward After a Layoff, Part 2Dont get emotionally devastated. Instead, put all of your energy and determination into what you need to do next, which includesPreparing your story regarding why you were laid off,Maintain contacts for future opportunities,Take time to assess and reflect on what has happened,And lastly, launch a proactive, thoughtful job search. So how do you launch a proactive, thoughtful job search? The first thing you need to do is to organize the current state of your finances. The less financial pressure you feel the better your job search will progress. Calculate your monthly expenses and your available resources. What cash do you have on hand? What unemployment benefits are available to you? Is severance included? If you need to decrease your variable expenses, do so. Consider temporary employment. If possible, transition benefits to your spouse or your significant other. Lastly, if needed, tap into a home equity line of credit. The second thing you must do is stay positive. Keep a daily schedule to ensure you work steadily on your job search. Exercise every day even if its a 30 minute walk. Read constantly and stay current because that will show during your interviews. Network like mad and connect with as many people as possible. Volunteer because it makes you feel good about yourself. Lastly, pick up a hobby because again, it expands your horizons and learning new things is always fun. Ensure you schedule time every day for your job search. Make it a priority and dont let anything interfere with this time. Master your job search skills which include writing a spectacular resume and having incredible interview skills. Practice with a friend or a coach if possible instead of with your dream employer. In this economy, you cannot afford to blow one lead. Create a tracking system for all the contacts youll meet and find a way to organize business cards and leads. We r ecommend having a spiral notebook so all the information is in one place. Set specific goals and deadlines for accomplishments. Lastly, cultivate a mentor and support system. This is not an easy time, but you can manage through it with a little help. In conclusion, aim for 10 target companies and there will be little doubt that youll soon be getting an offer of employment. We wish you the bestConnie Thanasoulis-Cerrachio is a career coach and co-founder of SixFigureStart and has worked for the bluest of blue chips for the past 25 years. Could your writing get you fired

Could your writing get you firedCould your writing get you fired6 reasons your boss wont tolerate bad writing skills. If you want to land and keep a job in todays market, communication is the name of the game. From your first job interview to your daily geschftsleben interactions, your job performance will rely on what you say and how you say it. And, as organizations become more connected with their clients and peers through the Internet, excellent written communication will become one of the most important job skills you learn. But why is writing so important to keeping your hard-won job? Here are just a few of the reasons why your boss wont tolerate poor writing skills.1. Lolz make you look badWhile text lingo and Twitter speak may save you some characters in your personal life, it really damages your bosss reputation. Its hard to take someone seriously who spells the word, srsly. In most offices, there is a professional etiquette when it comes to writing letters to clients or inter office communication. Writing in shorthand or slang makes you look less educated, disrespectful, or ignorant. In turn, that makes your boss look like an idiot for hiring you.2. Disorganized ideas = disorganized mindEven if you know how to use language effectively, if you dont know how to organize it, you wont get your ideas across effectively. If you cant write a logical and cohesive summary of a project, paper reviewing a new strategy, or a personal musiknote to a client, you have a very short career ahead of you. The ability to explain an idea without confusing the reader is one of the most vital collaborative skills. If you are unable to create a simple essay with a concrete thesis, body of supporting evidence, and conclusion, you will be at a severe disadvantage in the job market.3. Dont take that toneIn many customer-related geschftlicher umganges, written communication is one of the areas that causes the most trouble. If you dont have the ability to write for a specific audien ce and recognize the tone of your writing, you can potentially offend people, drive away business, or even get yourself fired. Take this follow-up letter for example.Dear SirIm sorry that you decided not to show up to our appointment. Im sure you had much more important things to do than to save $1000 on your annual car insurance. Not only is this apology condescending and sarcastic, its likely to lead to the loss of a potential client. The writer failed to consider the feelings of the reader, and will now have to deal with an irate customer and manager.4. Editing mistakes lead to lossAnother area that can get you into big trouble is editing. Without completing the editing step on your writing, embarrassing mistakes can accidently be shared with important clients or colleagues. While this makes you look less competent, it also can lead to serious miscommunications that can damage the reputation of the organization or cause significant financial loss. For example, if you write, 10,00 w ill be refunded to your account, instead of 10.00 will be refunded to your account, an irate customer may claim that they deserve $1,000 instead of the $10.00 that you meant. After a few of these kinds of mistakes, a manager will consider whether your employment is really worth the amount of money your writing skills are costing the company.5. Plagiarism and penaltiesOften, weak writers resort to copying when they dont know exactly what to say. In college, this can lead to a poor grade or loss of credit. In a business setting, you can easily lose your job or damage your companys reputation. If you borrow more than six words from a colleague or competitor, you need to share that with your management and cite your sources. Otherwise, both socially and legally, you are putting your company in jeopardy of copyright infringement or other potentially damaging legal recrimination.6. Missing deadlines leads to distrustFinally, time management is a key element of good writing. Excellent writ ers are able to know and meet deadlines, often days in advance. If you dont learn this skill now, it could significantly impact your job performance later. In fact, missing deadlines is one of the most common reasons for disciplinary action in a professional setting. Missing deadlines makes managers feel that you are unorganized, undisciplined, and disrespectful. Although you may not be fired for missing one or two, consecutively missing assignment deadlines will negatively impact your job performance and can permanently damage your career.

Fundamental Technical What Just Happened to the Stock Market

Fundamental Technical What Just Happened to the Stock Market Between January 26 and February 9, the Dow lost mora than 2,400 points, a 9 percent decline. This rapidfall in a short period of time has taken many of us back down memory lane to the financial crisis of 2008. Are we headed to a new crisis? A recession? When the stock market starts spiraling downward for more than a couple of days, we understand there is something more to the story than a mere flash crashor correction. What is actually going on behind the scenes, however, is not easy to uncover.Financial markets are complex. They are affected by many forces macro events, politics, fundamental information and news, technical movements of the market, market structure and instruments, spill-over effect from global markets, andso on.How can one decipher the main causes of a decline amid the noise?Could all factors be equally responsible? This most recent fall began with news on inflation and futur e interest rate hikes. This is good news. Inflation has been one of the Feds carefully watched benchmarks for economic recovery since the financial crisis. If the Fed is on the trajectory to increase interest rates, then the Fed is confident that the economy is strong enough to sustain the increase. This news welches followed by more economic news which supported the Feds outlook Jobless claims were down, productivity was up, unemployment was low, and wages were increasing. But havent we been expecting that inflation would rise, and so would interest rates? Why the surprise? As much as we have expected these things to happen sooner or later, no one was sure about the exact timing. Its not the news about inflation and rate hikes that spooked the market. The implications of these indicators for the economy are what caused uncertainty among traders. One of inflations implications is that the real value of an asset, such as a company, is less (as the purchasing power decreases), which may b e interpreted as investors looking for a higher real rate of return.Interest rate hikes may have an effect on the value of companies with high levels of debt on their balance sheets (e.g., Netflix). Such companies would need to pay higher interest on their debts, which would increase their interest costs, resulting in lower profits. The macro indicators of inflation and interest rates do have tangible implications for the economy, which we shouldkeep in mind and examine carefully in general and on a case-by-case fundament per company as events unfold in the coming months. But thats not the end of the story.Unfortunately, the uncertainty among traders triggered machine algorithms that amplified the spiral downward. The majority of trades today are done by algorithms. Since these algorithms are triggered by certain signals, even a small decline could set the market to a sell-off.The domino effect did not stop there. Market sell-offs tend to increase market volatility. another indicato r of market uncertainty. This in turn caused the volatility index (i.e., VIX) to spikemore than 200 percent. This is a normal reaction. When markets are down, volatility goes up. Therefore, the VIX spiking was not a surprise. The reactions of the instruments based on the VIX, however, were surprising. It seems Wall Street is not lacking in creativity when it comes to constructing trading vehicles that have the potential to blow up when things go haywire. What is the problem with these instruments? Lets take for example VelocityShares Daily Inverse VIX Short-Term ETN (XIV). Market volatility has been dormant for many years. Since the financial crisis, we have not experienced any major volatility spikes except for the summer of 2015 or early 2016, which subsided quite quickly. Wall Street professionals managed to find ways to make extra money out of this low VIX situation by betting against it, and the XIV is one example of that. Inverse VIX means that when the VIX is low (i.e., volatili ty is low), the instrument is going up (i.e., making money). Hence, as long as volatilitywasdormant, whoever held this instrument made money. One volatility spike, however, and these instruments can go almost to zero. Thats exactly what has happened to XIV it has declined bymore than 96 percent in a couple of days.Money managers who have invested in these instruments had to sell other assets (i.e., stocks) in buchen to cover for these losses, which created another domino effect. How much are money managers invested in these VIX instruments? We dont know. So, the sell-off could continue for a bit longer. (This type of instrument would be on our watch list as a barometerfor understanding the full extent of the sell-off.)Lets recap the trail of eventsThe macro indicators will take several months to a year to unfold. The technical indicators, however, are usually short-lived, and hopefully will subside soon.Dr. Merav Ozair hasmore than 12 years of business and consulting experience and more than 15 years of teaching experience with both graduate students and financial professionals. 5 Ways HR Can Build Your Organizations Positive Brand

5 Ways HR Can Build Your Organizations Positive Brand5 Ways HR Can Build Your Organizations Positive BrandWhen most people think about branding, Human Resources is not something that naturally comes to mind. Instead, you think of slick advertising campaigns and instantly identifiable logos that inherently promise value, quality and a desirable image or personality. Whenyou think about the worlds most successful brands, you think of names like Google, Coca-Cola, and Apple- brands that have transcended their category of product or service to become icons themselves. But if you look closely, these brands also have another thing in common. They consistently top annual Best Places to Work lists. In plus-rechnen to brand recognition, they also have a strong company culture and highly engaged employees. Many would argue that strong brands attract strong talent, but strong brands are also built by strong talent. Its no secret that employees who are engaged work harder, are mora productive and are less likely to leave their companies. Study after study shows that organizations that score high in employee engagement have higher productivity and profitability and lower turnover and absenteeism. Engaged employees who believe in the companies they work for, who feel bought into the workplace culture, create value for a brand through productivity. But, they can also become brand ambassadors for your organization. Your current employees are a trusted source of information for potential employees. Branding is no longer solely the job of the marketing department. HR professionals must now embrace their roles as internal branders. Lets take a closer look at five aspects of that role onboarding, reward programs, communication and messaging, culture, and technology. HR Streamlines Onboarding Programs for Employees to Build Your Brand Making a strong first impression with potential employees goes a long way in building your brand. The same is true for your employees. During those first few weeks of onboarding and starting a new job, it is critical to meet or exceed expectations. For example, employees spend significant amounts of time engaged in new-hire and benefits-related administration during their first month with an organization. Paper form completion and fragmented enrollment processes can challenge an employees expectations of their new organization. This is especially true when processes are inconsistent with the organizations approach to other aspects of the joining process.A disjointed onboarding process can lead to unhappy hires. A company well-known for its streamlined onboarding process is Facebook, where new hires are sent key documents to complete before their start date. In addition, all devicescomputers, phones, and so forthare calibrated for new employees when they arrive. Many businesses are seeing the value of investing in technology and processes that streamline the onboarding experience for their employees. Some businesses use tactics like onboarding-in-a-box,wherein new hires are given tablets or USBs containing all of the forms and applications necessary to enroll in their benefits. In some cases, using technology to streamline the benefits process can reduce the employee enrollment time from two and a half hours to just nine minutes. Efficiency in onboarding processes can plant the seeds for growing future brand ambassadors. HR Uses Reward Programs and Communication to Build Your Brand Just as marketers must consider the customer experience when developing products and programs for their patrons, HR pros must keep the employee experience at the forefront of reward and communication strategies. Benefit provision is one of the largest business costs for the majority of organizations and a major driver of staff engagement. Providing the right rewards can be central to incentivizing employee behavior and engagement. But there is a challenge for employers to ensure that their employees truly value the benefits package offeredand recognize the investment that the company makes in its reward spend. Thats when strong employee communication and branding become key. Internal communication programs and tools should be engaging, intuitive and informative, with visuals and language that helps staff better understand the benefits available to them. They should also have a look and feel that is consistent with the companys public image. Furthermore, its important to reach staff through their preferred communication channels - whether thats email, face-to-face in department meetings, text messages, or online video guides. HR pros should do regular audits of their internal communication programs and survey staff to better understand their preferences. As with communication, one size does not fit all for employee benefits packages. Thats why its important to consider the demographics of your workforce and which benefits are going to be the most important to them. Youll want to brand those packages ap propriately. For instance, a younger worker may value more paid time off or a flexible work schedule over the retirement benefits sought by older employees. Keep an eye on new benefits trends like wellness programs and flexible spending accounts. Assess whether these benefits might be right for your organization to stay competitive. Just as the worlds top brands evolve with industry changes, so should benefits packages. Starbucks, for instance, has a workforce with a large population of part-time workers, but they are still eligible for full health insurance benefits, stock awards, and free coffee. Employees who feel their companies offer competitive benefits packages are likely to share that opinion with others, which, of course, is great for your company brand. HR Uses Culture and Messaging to Build Your Organizations Brand Employees want to feel connected to their organization and its culture- whether they work from company headquarters or a remote location. Businesses seekin g to strengthen their brand among workers must clearly communicate the companys values, employee expectations, core-culture, and commitment. An example of a company that does this well is Netflix. A PowerPoint presentation released by Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, which has been viewed more than 5 million times on the web, outlines the companys talent management strategies, which are based on philosophies like talent managers should think like businesspeople and innovators first, and like HR people last. Forget throwing parties and handing out T-shirts make sure every employee understands what the company needs most and exactly whats meant by high performance. This strategy appears to be working well for the company, whose high-performing workforce grew the U.S. subscriber base to 55 million in 2018. Netflix hit a record117.6 millionsubscribers thanks to an addition of 1.9 million domestic and 6.4 million international streaming subscribers. A challenge facing many businesses today, p articularly multinational organizations, is in creating a unified global approach to messaging and communication. The employee journey, branding, and messaging must remain consistent and build a global identity. This is accomplishedthrough harmonizing, branded reward and communication programs with the same look, feel, and structure across all locations. In this way, each time an employee receives communication about policies, procedures or company news, whether they access that information in California or Canada, or the U.K. or the Philippines, they can engage with the brand and the companys key messages. HR Uses Technology to Build Your Organizations Brand The technology an employee uses at work has an impact on his perception of the employers brand. Robust technology that is easy to use and engaging indicates that an organization is innovative. Workplace technology that is perceived as cool and cutting-edge among your employees will help position your brand as an industry le ader that invests in its resources. An engaging smartphone and tablet-friendly portal that employees can access anytime, anywhere, can help reinforce employee interaction, participation, and engagement with your brand. Using cloud-based technology solutions, that are easily integrated, can also enhance the employee user experience. They give the employee the ability to move between self-service applications seamlessly- without even noticing the use of multiple software solutions. Additionally, just as Chief Marketing Officers use marketing automation to manage customer relationships, HR pros can use automation technologies to develop positive relationships with their customers, the employees. The technologies can identify employee position updates such as address changes, new job titles, or family changes. They can then automatically generate personalized messages to offer congratulations, alert employees to required actions, and aid in benefits selection. This can all be achieved u sing consistent branding and messages to reinforce employee engagement with the organization. The role of HR in branding will continue to be an important one. The research has shown that an engaged, productive and inspired workforce of brand ambassadors can have a positive impact on your brand as well as any marketing or PR campaign you put together. Organizations that approach branding from the inside out build a strong foundation for success.

Paul McCartney shared the storyleaving James Corden in tears. Those words of wisdom inspired McCartney to compose one of thefruchtwein successful songsby The Beatles. Most importantly, they helped him reconnect with the power of living in the here and now.The life you aremissingPast and future are in the mind only I amnow.- Sri Nisargadatta MaharajYour life happens in the present the rest is an illusion. When you speculate aboutwhat might beandwhat might have been, you are ignoring what is happeningnow. Thousands of individual stories converge for a moment in a physical space however, people are unaware of each other.Augs An Introduction to Supervermodernity was initially published in 2009, but now it makes more sense than ever. The author analyzes the anthropology of the near everyday life. He promotes an anthropological shift from analyzing remote societies to understanding whats happening closer to home an invitation to focus on the here and now.Traditionally, a culture was presumed to be inextricably located within a specific place and time. Non-spacesfill a place between places. They preserve our anonymity and loneliness as we move around. Public spaces have a clear goal. People gather at a church, synagogue or mosque to pray. We go to a park to play sports, spend time with our kids or just have a walk. Conversely, non-places are a means to an end. Going to the airport is not a desired destination you go there because you have to travel. The paradox of non-places is, though we have a lot of free time, we get more distracted rather than focusing on the here and now. The places that obsessively scrutinize your identity effectively strip yourinner-selfaway.American sociologist Benjamin Bratton said Airports are a critical cohabitation of security and entertainment. Non-places provide an excellent opportunity to reconnect with your life in the present.Regulate your transitioning speedDo you have a hard time focusing on the now?An event becomes history as soon as we live it. Waiting makes us anxious. We want to escape feeling bored thats why our mind anticipates events.Boredom has nothing to do with the environment. Its not external boredom ishow you engage with the world. The desire to evade an unwanted situation or moment accelerates our inner speed. Our mind goes faster and faster when we cant adapt to transitional places or moments. People feel the need to look in a hurry while they are waiting in a non-place, even though it serves them no purpose.Rushing into the airport line wont get you a better a seat they are pre-assigned already. Standing up as soon as the plane lands, wont do you any favor either. You wont be able to get off the aircraft until the people in the previous lines do so.Leo Tolstoy said Remember then there is only one time that is important Now It is the most important time because it is the only time when we have any power. What drives your need to be in a hurry?Seth Godindefines being in a hurry as a state of mind. He explains that, at the airport, people in a hurry are stressed, distracted and no more likely to make their flight. At work, people in a hurry avoid getting sidetracked and more likely to leap. The author recommends two strategiesRedefine in a hurry to be a version of your best self. So that hurry isnt a crutch, or an excuse, but an asset.Turn on hurry whenever you need it, and turn it off when you dont.Regulating your transition speed can help you reconnect with the here and now. When you realize that, most of the times, theres no need to be running, its easier to start living in the present.Embrace a let it beattitudeMindfulness is the art of living in the moment. Its a state of active, open, intentional attention on the present as is you are letting life be.As Henry David Thoreau said In any weather, at any hour of the day or night, I have been anxious to improve the nick of time, and notch it on my stick too to stand on the meeting of two eterniti es, the past and future, which is precisely the present moment to toe that line.1. Everything will be allrightWhen you worry, you stop paying attention to whats happening around you. You dont need to wait for Paul McCartneys mother to visit you in your dreams. Everything will be all right because it always does. With perspective, all our lifes events make sense all moments end falling in the right place. When you stop worrying, you make room to appreciate what is happening now.Worry keeps you busy by inaction. John Lennon said Life is what happens to you while you are busy making other plans.McCartney stopped fighting reality and let go of worrying. Let it be was the last single by The Beatles. After they released an album under the same name, the band split. Both McCartney and Lennon became very successful in theirsolocareers.Dont fight life, let it be. Youll never know whats on the other side of your comfort zone until you give it a try.2. Minimize distractionsWhen we are waiting, we tend to look for distractions to avoid feeling bored. The paradox is that, the more you stimulate your mind, the more bored youll get.Stop fighting boredom. Start by mimizing distractions. If you are at a non-place, disconnect your WiFi. Focus your time on doing one activity that will help you relax. Listen to music, practice some deep breathing exercises, follow a guided meditation, or just read a book.Train your mind to be okay with doing one single thing at-a-time.This part is essential. Most people fail at removing distractions because they shift from multitasking to no-tasking thus, creating an empty space that drives more anxiety.3. Turn your transitional time into apauseTake control of your speed by purposefully deciding when to be in a hurry or not. Life is a marathon, not a sprint. Resilience and continuity are more important than speed.Regain the value of pausing. Reconnect with your feelings and emotions. If something is bothering you, whyis it? Acknowledge your positive emotions too. Celebrate your recent achievements, no matter how small. Reflect on your behaviors, what can you improve?Turn your transitional time in a moment for reflection or generation. If you are facing problems at work, pausing provides room to understand why and to create potential solutions.4. Embrace your owncompanySolitude drives most of our anxiety. We are not used to be on our own. Transitional places isolate us more they are full of people, but we are all anonymous. Some people socialize as a distraction. You can always meet new people in unpredictable places. However, many opt to chit chat as a way to avoid their inner voice. Considering how invasive and distractive our society has become, having time for yourself is a luxury. Learn to protect that right.Turn yourself in someone you want to spend time with.See yourinner-selffrom a distance. TheObserving-Selfis like the sky. Your thoughts and emotions are like the weather. No matter how strong the storms, they cant damage the sky.Check out this exerciseto train your observing self.5. Celebrate every moment oflifeYour expectations are stealing yournow-ness. This moment, as is happening now, will never again return. Every experience is unique. When you stop appreciating whats happening, you are missing a moment that you wont be able to recover.Living in the here and now is a celebration of whats happening, not of what you wish it happens. As Thoreau said, the present is the meeting of two eternities, the past and future.Life is continually evolving. We spend most of our time transitioning rather than wasting those moments, embrace their uniqueness.Instead of resisting the discomfort turn transitional places and moments into an opportunity to value your present time.Life happens in thehere and now.Let it be.This article first appeared on Medium. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 l essons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Awards are made to units for services conducted during World War II if performed between 1 January 1944 and 15 September 1946. The Meritoriou s Unit Commendation was authorized for units and/or detachments of the United States military for exceptionally meritorious conduct in theperformance of outstanding services for at least six continuous months in support of military operations. This service must relate to combat support activities and not be activities performed by senior headquarters, combat, or combat support units. Who Can Wear the Meritorious Unit Commendation Award All members of the unit cited for the award are approved to wear the emblem of the Meritorious Unit Commendation. The emblem is thought of as an individual decoration for those in connection with the cited acts and is approved to be worn if they continue as members of the unit or not. Other personnel serving with the unit are approved to wear the emblem to show that the unit is a recipient of the Meritorious Unit Commendation. Army awards and decorations are approved inaccordance with the guidance contained inArmy Regulation 600-8-22. Rules for th e proper wear of Army awards and decorations can be found inArmy Regulation 670-1. The policy for display of unit awards on guidons and flags and supply of streamers is found in AR 840-10. Background of theArmy Meritorious Unit Commendation The Meritorious Unit Commendation was originally established by War Department Circular 345 on 23 August 1944, as the Meritorious tafelgeschirr Unit Plaque. This circular provided that units which received the Plaque were entitled to wear on the right sleeves of their service coat and shirt the Meritorious Service Unit Insignia. A gold star placed on the plaque represented additional awards until War Department Circular No. 54, 1946, provided that additional awards would be shown by placing a golden numeral on the inside of the wreath. In December 1946 the Meritorious Service Unit Plaque was eliminated, replaced with the issue of the Meritorious Unit Commendation. A new design of the Meritorious Service Unit emblem was approved by the D/PA in April 1947. This replaced the sleeve insignia and was to be effective 1 January 1949. Stock levels of the insignia were such that the phase-out was delayed for several years. Wear of the old one was prohibited after 30 June 1962. However, the stock level was still such that it was not introduced into the supply system until 14 July 1966. On 16 May 1947, AR 260-15 announced Meritorious Unit Commendation, granted the wear of the Meritorious Unit Commendation emblem, and permitted the display of the scarlet Meritorious Unit Commendation streamer, which displayed the name of the applicable theater of operations in white letters.
