Job Search vs. Organize Your Files LinkedIn for Job Seekers for $49.95 $25. Check out all the specials here. Many years ago I worked at the FBI as a clerk. When I first started there we didnt have an office or cubicles, but eventually someone fought for us to have our own little space.  It was really nice and we ended up with our own oversized cubicles.  Going from nothing to a full suite was really cool. I look back on that time and remember a distinct activity I did when I was bored (I was frequently bored there).  I would organize my files. I could spend a lot of time going through my files, organizing them, labeling the hanging file folders, reorganizing them, putting them back in their  fireproof file cabinet, I looked very productive. But it just didnt matter! I was a clerk, and I didnt really have much to file!  I was wasting my time and the federal govts money (no, feds, dont come after me for that). I think about that a lot because I had the freedom to choose what I was going to do with my time, and I didnt do what I could have been doing. Similar  to my job search, I all-of-the-sudden had days with nothing on my agenda.  Oh sure, I had things I knew I should have been doing, but if I didnt do it today, it would just roll over to tomorrow, or the next day, or the next day.  It really wasnt a big deal to take time to do something as mundane as organize my files. While the important stuff was getting moved back to another day. What do you do in your job search?  How often will you catch up on your email when you know you are avoiding making a phone call? How often will you do something meaningless, something that doesnt take you closer to your goal (of gainful employment, or replacement of income) rather than something that is hard? I challenge you today: DO THAT THING. You know what THAT THING is (I dont know what YOUR thing is, but I know what MY thing is, and today Im going to do it).  It is the thing you keep putting off.  You know its important but you somehow have figured out how to keep bumping it down your priority list. The Deadly Effect of Working 9 Till 5 How To Stay In Shape The bad habits of desk-bound office workers could be leading to 90,000 unnecessary deaths every year, according to an academic study.  The typical ‘nine-to-five’ roles that so many people have are leading to many people sitting down for at least eight hours in a day, which is storing up big health problems. A 20-year University of Cambridge study involving more than one million adults lifted the lid on the state of the UK’s inactivity problem.  It found that 37 per cent of UK adults are classed as ‘completely inactive’ because they spend less than half an hour a day on their feet. The issue of inactivity was said to be directly responsible for one in six deaths â€" including issues such as heart disease and diabetes â€" and is said to cost the economy £1.7 billion a year. Worldwide, it’s even thought that the number of deaths caused by inactivity matches the number as a result of smoking â€" both amounting to more than five million people. Raising awareness of the issue of inactivity The academics behind the study want to raise awareness of the dangers people face when chained to their desks. It’s thought that the modern employee has grown complacent given that offices themselves are much safer than the industrial workplaces of days gone by. Professor Ulf Ekelund, lead researcher, told the Daily Mail: “For many people who commute to work and have office-based jobs, there is no way to escape sitting for prolonged periods of time. “For these people in particular, we cannot stress enough the importance of getting exercise.   Whether it’s getting out for a walk at lunchtime, going for a run in the morning or cycling to work.” Campaign group vows to take a stand The study’s findings chime with the message of a campaign group that is concerned about the lack of activity among the UK’s office workers. Get Britain Standing and the British Heart Foundation recently teamed up to launch the On Your Feet Britain campaign. Gavin Bradley, from Get Britain Standing, told the BBC: Were all victims of our environment.  Weve taken a lot of activity out of the workplace and were sitting longer and longer. We need new and innovative ways of addressing the issue. Stand up when youre on the phone or in meetings, do everything you can to avoid sitting. He also called on people to get into the habit of taking a break from their computer screens every 30 minutes, using the stairs at every opportunity and making sure they eat their lunch away from their desks. What happens out of the office is also important While getting people off their feet on a regular basis at work is important, so too is encouraging a healthier lifestyle in general. If people are inspired by Team GB’s Olympic success to get the keep-fit bug, then this will help. The sort of people who have a planned workout regime with, as Fysiqal demonstrates, the right balance of diet and exercise, will not want to let that go to waste between the working hours of nine and five. Often the focus after an Olympics turns to young people and the next generation of stars but adults too need to be inspired to become more active and healthier. Cooperative Fortnight University of Manchester Careers Blog Just a quick blog from me today as I just wanted to highlight a great opportunity I’ve heard about to visit a number of cooperatives in the Greater Manchester area and no I don’t mean the supermarket! Cooperatives or co-ops are they are more commonly known are businesses/organisations that are owned and run by members who share the profits and benefits. Despite representing less than 1% of all businesses, research carried out by the work place review website JobCrowd found that 4 of what they suggest to be the top 25 graduate employers were actually co-ops. This research suggests that co-ops might be a great place to work and are worthy of further exploration. As Part of Cooperative Fortnight (June 22nd 6th July) Cooperatives 2020 are offering a series of FREE visits to a range of co-ops in Greater Manchester. It’ll be a chance to find out what work in this area is like and a great opportunity to network with people in the sector. There is a brief overview of each recruiter and each has a link to that recruiters website. At the top of the page are additional recruiter links for Higher Education, Medical Education and eLearning. The right hand side of the page has additional links for related resources. Executive Search Firms and Job Recruiters This resource, which is provided by Careeroverview.com, lists a number of recruiters down the center of the page with overviews and embedded links. But that is not all. On the left hand side of the page is a listing of popular careers, one of which is Education. Additionally, there are links at the top of the page for assorted career related topics.
